February Topic – Offline Data Collection and Syncing with Xamarin

Case study review of two mobile apps developed for the livestock industry to work offline in remote locations. Built on Xamarin using SQL Lite and Realm. We will review challenges encountered with data collection where no internet access is available and storing data offline and syncing process used.

Tom Soderling is a .NET developer who discovered Xamarin five years ago and jumped at the chance to write apps for his iPhone using C#. He is a Xamarin Certified Mobile Developer, a Xamarin.Forms enthusiast, and creator of several apps, like How Deep Is It? September Topic – Cross-Platform Mobile Development with Google Flutter

Flutter is Google’s new cross-platform mobile development framework. With Flutter, Google wanted to create a reactive, cross-platform mobile development framework that helped speed up development, abstract UX/UI into the framework and provide great performance. In this session, we’ll walk through the Dart language (because Flutter uses it), the basics of Flutter, the Flutter device APIs, comparisons to other cross-platform mobile development frameworks (like Xamarin, React Native and Cordova) and build a few slick demos to see Flutter’s powers in action.

Vince has been a passionate developer and consultant since 2005. He is currently an independent consultant. He received his MCSD for .NET with C# back in 2008. In recent years, he’s immersed himself in front-end technologies. Even more recently, he’s developed a passion for mobile development, specifically of the cross-platform variety. August Topic – How to Build a Smart Garage Door Opener / Sensor for Under $100

Tired of using a keypad or a remote to open your garage door? Do you ever get to work and wonder if you closed the garage? Problems with your numeric keypad in the Minnesota winter? I wanted to build a smart garage door opener that would allow me to use my phone to open the door and to check the status of the door on my phone from anywhere. I also wanted a project to use my Raspberry Pi 3. In this session, you will learn about the basic hardware I bought to support the sensor and signaling needs of the system and how they connect to the Pi. I’ll also go over the applications I wrote to handle the logic on the Raspberry Pi and phone. I’ll cover the connections between the phone and the system, the remote access, and how it all fits together. Learn how you can enhance the system with features like sending alerts when your door has been open for an extended period of time.

If you’ve done a moderate amount of Xamarin development, you have probably written some abstractions over platform-specific APIs. You may have also used Effects or Custom Renderers in Xamarin.Forms to achieve this – but what approaches are there for creating your reusable shared code that take advantage of native device capabilities without depending on Xamarin.Forms? In this session, we will explore various code-sharing strategies and architectures you can use to create plugins and walkthrough designing a simple example plugin from scratch, all the way down to creating NuGet packages.
